Today, I worked on one project only during our weekly creativity meeting. I took a pair of my 6' 4.5 " son's jeans and created a jeans skirt.
I had previously slit the inseams of the legs. I seamed the raw seams together to create a tube skirt, measured and cut the fabric to be hemmed below the knees. I sewed the back seem up, leaving a kick slit for walking. Then I realized that I was going to have to take the seam to the top necessitating cutting the waist band. Out came the seam ripper! I removed the belt loop. I took scissors and cut through the center of the back waist band. Completely open I could smoothly sew the back to fit me.
Then I worked on the front. It wanted to curve below the zipper. Out came the ripper again. Now I can make the front straight and smooth. I will need to redo the button hole, insertion of the zipper, and re- top-stitch it all. I will need to rebind the button hole and then I get to decide on embellishment if any. Then when I complete it I can reattach the belt loop in the center of the back and no one will see where I cut through the waist band.
Starting with a pair of pants a few sizes larger than me, and the willingness to focus on detail, means I can have a nearly free denim skirt that does not need inserts of fabric and can be a smooth tube style skirt.
Cost of the project so far- Thread.
Somehow refashioning made me want to sing Bibbity Bobbity Boo...
